Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
Welcome
to an exciting, art enriched experience at South Hunterdon High School.
Please take some time to review the information provided below,
regarding the program and expectations.
Materials Needed for Success:
Students are required to bring a pencil to each and every art class.
Although sketchbooks are not required, serious students may want to use
one for classwork and ideas. I recommend a sketchbook with a spiral
binding to ensure that sketches do not become loose and fall out.
Sketching is something that we do often, whether students are working on
a project or a specific drawing assignment. Students should also come
to class with any needed reference materials (photographs, previous
work, sketches, etc.). Without these materials, students will lose
precious class time and have difficulty earning the grades you would
like to see them achieve.
Grades:
As with all academic classes, students earn grades throughout each
marking period. Any missing or late assignments during the course of the
semester will be reflected in his/her overall grade. This class is part
of the honor roll average, so it is important that students complete
their work on time and to the best of their ability. Grades can be
reviewed on the parent portal. Due to the project-based nature of the
course, there are few grades, which are posted sporadically.
Student Evaluation: Students
are graded on their effort, attention to following project guidelines,
creativity, craftsmanship, final project critique and individual
abilities. There is an emphasis on time-on-task and perseverance. As an
art teacher, I am looking for student growth and ability to
process/apply new knowledge and learned skills. Responsibility is an
important element in a child’s education. Students need to monitor their
own progress and determine if they require extra time in order to
complete their project by the assigned due date. Extra time will be
available to students at unit lunch or after school. Please refer to
the Art Grading Rubric for more detailed information about the evaluation process.
Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the program.
Sincerely,
Dawn Stevens
