Information for Students and Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome to an exciting, art enriched experience at South Hunterdon High School.  Please take some time to review the information provided below, regarding the program and expectations.

Materials Needed for Success:  Students are required to bring a sketchbook (any size from 5”x7” to 9”x12” is ideal) and a pencil to each and every art class. I recommend using a sketchbook with a spiral binding to ensure that sketches do not become loose and fall out. Sketching is something that we do often, whether students are working on a project or a specific sketch assignment. Students should also come to class with any needed reference materials (photographs, previous work, sketches, etc.).  Without these materials, students will lose precious class time and have difficulty earning the grades you would like to see them achieve.

Homework:  The sketch assignment is the only homework given, so it is extremely important that students complete each assignment given and submit it on time. Points are deducted for late assignments and missing assignments can negatively impact a student’s overall grade.  On average, students have six sketch assignments for the marking period. Due dates and assignments are posted in the art room and on each class’s Google Classroom site.  Demonstrations and directions are given in class to ensure expectations and success. Students are given a sketch grade (0-10) and individualized feedback to encourage improvement.

Grades:  As with all academic classes, students are given letter grades at the completion of each marking period. Any missing or late assignments during the course of the semester will be reflected in the overall grade. This class is part of the honor roll average, so it is important that students complete their work on time and to the best of their ability.  Grades can be reviewed on the parent portal.

Student Evaluation:  Students are graded on their effort, ability to follow project guidelines, creativity, craftsmanship, final project critique and their individual abilities. As an art teacher, I am looking for student growth and ability to process the knowledge and skills learned. Responsibility is an important element in a child’s education. Students need to monitor their own progress and determine if they require extra time in order to complete their project by the assigned due date. Extra time will be available to students at unit lunch or after school.  Please refer to the Art Grading Rubrics for more detailed information about the evaluation process.

Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the program.
